We’ve got an arsenal, and we’re not afraid to use it. Is it dusk yet?

As you can see, we bought fireworks yesterday, so the Fifth Street Militia will once again be blowing things up in celebration of Independence Day. Purchasing fireworks was a little challenging this year. Usually, we seek out the booth run by the local Lokahi Outrigger Canoe Club, as I’d rather support them than some of the more polarizing nonprofit groups. Alas, an hour of driving around from booth to booth yielded no results, so this year we bought our fireworks from two vendors: Petaluma Ballet School and the Casa Grande High School Band & Cheer.

And for those fuddy-duddies insisting that Petaluma’s legal, “Safe and Sane” fireworks vendors somehow contribute to the handful of illegal aerials we inevitably see this time of year, I have this to say: Blaming permit-carrying, legal vendors for unrelated illegal activity is akin to blaming CVS for the actions of drug dealers. That is, no correlation whatsoever.

Yesterday, Jennifer, Maddie, and I decided to check out Petaluma’s latest culinary hot spot, Avatar’s Punjabi Burrito, located where Aram’s Mediterranean Cafe used to be. We miss Aram’s, but right off the bat, we were happy to discover that many members of Aram’s waitstaff were now working at Avatar’s… and smiling!

And the food was wonderful. I had a rice plate with smoked eggplant, while Jennifer tried a burrito stuffed with curried vegetables. Perfectly-cooked rice, nicely-textured chickpeas, and fresh vegetables. Outstanding!

“That smells good,” says Maddie. “Can I have a bite?”

And we spotted this, in the planter box by Zazzle Cafe:

“Saved from what?” What, indeed?
