Happy Maddie-versary!

"Six years, Maddie," I announced early this morning as I stepped into the office. "Happy Maddie-versary."

Cooper, or the Elephant in the Room

I was working on a second cup of morning coffee, reading through an anthology I’d be correcting this weekend, when Maddie finally decided to join me in the living room. “Hello there, sleepyhead,” I said, as she climbed up her steps and settled onto the couch nearby. “About time you woke up.” Maddie yawned. “I’ve been awake for a while. Thinking.”

Reading books, Making Bank… The Update.

So Jennifer figured out what to do with the money. We're donating it to the Sonoma County Public Library Foundation, along with the following note: "This donation represents $1 for each book we read in 2009 - an accomplishment that would not have been possible without our public library system. Thank you!"

Small Dog Social – January 2010

Maddie and I just got home from this month's Small Dog Social at Our Best Friends. Somehow, I managed to snap eight hundred and sixty-three pictures (3.45 GB!) while there. Blame the new camera. It was tough, but I've narrowed the selection down to the sixty-four best, including the one below. Click on through to [...]

Reading books, making Bank…

Over the course of the last year, every time Jennifer or I would finish reading a book, we'd drop a dollar bill into a mason jar...

Free Fiction: The Killer Fruitcake that Ate Petaluma

This third and final story for the season was performed by Sedge Thomson at Page on Stage's Twisted Christmas 2007 and appeared in the 2007 chapbook The Pugilist’s Holiday and Other Holiday Tales of the Twisted and Grotesque. It is presented here as my way of saying "Happy Holidays!" The Killer Fruitcake that Ate Petaluma [...]

It’s the most wonderful (that is, chaotic) time of the year…

"It's the craziest, busiest time of the year," says Maddie. "Jennifer and Ross are running amok, cleaning the house and baking cookies. Lots and lots of cookies. Tons of cookies. It's cookie chaos! I really hope I get to eat one or two cookies. Or three. Or more. I'm not picky." "Christmas cards have been [...]

Free Fiction: Xmas Eve of the Living Dead

This story is a little bit bleak. I consider it to be more of a zombie story (with Christmas) than a Christmas story (with zombies). It appeared in the 2007 chapbook The Pugilist’s Holiday and Other Holiday Tales of the Twisted and Grotesque. As with last Wednesday's story, it is presented here as my way [...]

Free Fiction: The Pugilist’s Holiday

This story was performed by Will Durst at Page on Stage's Twisted Christmas 2006 and appeared in the 2007 chapbook The Pugilist’s Holiday and Other Holiday Tales of the Twisted and Grotesque. It is presented here as my way of saying "Happy Holidays!" The Pugilist’s Holiday (with apologies to Two-Gun Bob) Ross E. Lockhart We [...]

Veterans’ Day Parade

Every November, Petaluma plays host to the largest Veterans' Day parade north of the Golden Gate. It's always a fun slice of Americana, with vintage warplane fly-overs, marching bands, antique military vehicles (and personnel), and the usual patriotic pomp and circumstance. Since I'm working from home today, I timed Maddie's walk so that we could [...]
